Local American lives have long been depicted in a great light. Pictures of rancher battles, ribbon and bow and arrows, teepees, and totem poles come to mind. At the rear of these hackneyed images and ideals right now there stands a darker reality. Through the entire history of the usa, Native American's have been on the receiving end of unequal treatment. If it was loss of lands, required assimilation, or unequal rights the Local American individuals have a long good oppression and discrimination. One of the detrimental aspects of this bumpy treatment was your assimilation that Native Americans experienced in the late nineteenth and early on twentieth hundred years.

This article will give attention to the compression of Indigenous American's through the Progressive Period. Specifically, it will eventually focus on the assimilation of students in Native Indian schools. Through close study of Document 13. 6, File 13. six, and other options, this article will show a common theme seen during is the retention of Local American students into American society as well as the struggles connected with this change.

A major have difficulty that Native American students faced once assimilating into American society was a decrease of cultural identification. This cultural loss was obviously a product of Indian learners being directed by American teachers who were not knowledgeable in the cultures and customs of the very college students they educated. Due to the American teachers insufficient cultural understanding, Native American students weren't taught quite values and traditions with their cultures. Yet , the biggest reason that Native American students lost their ethnic identity was because of the procedures that the universities used to

power assimilation. " From the policymakers' point of view, the civilization process required a twofold assault on American indian children's personality. On the one hand, the college needed to remove all to the outside signs of the children's recognition with tribal life, in other words, their savage ways. On the other, the children would have to be instructed in the ideas, principles, and behaviours of white-colored civilization. ”1 The policymakers' goal was going to strip away almost all aspects of tribal life and to instruct the scholars with the ideals of white colored civilization. These kinds of policies, a few drastic, were enforced specifically to eliminate different factors of Native American culture. One way that schools attempted to change the social identity of Native American students was by needing all pupils to have short-hair. This straight conflicts with Native American culture where men and woman numerous have always acquired long, unclean hair. The reason this coverage was considered enacted was to help with the control of louse and disease in schools. However , the actual reason that the policy was enacted was due to the " belief that the children's lengthy hair was symbolic of savagism and removing it had been central to the new id with world. ”2 The policymakers and administrators in Native American schools held these revolutionary beliefs about assimilation. It is due to these types of flawed tips of compression that generated the loss of ethnic identity amongst Native Americans throughout the Progressive Time. Students who had been forced to slice their hair believed an immediate lack of culture and spirit. In
