Tj truck Rensburg -- 11029005 Essential Studies 2B - Place and Space Article In undoing the concept of ‘Place' I have chosen to write about a photograph taken by Tareen Photography, a photographer coming from New Zeeland. It is a photograph depicting a homeless man on one of the numerous piers for the Durban beach. (Fig. 1) I believe this photo is an excellent example in discussing ‘place' as a principle.

Place is a word used in every day vocabulary, primarily to indicate a certain location that could be demonstrated by using coordinates to pinpoint where that site is in the globe, although it may also be used to mean ownership or maybe a sense of hierarchy. A location could label a house or a park this creates a area around the place, giving it a deeper meaning than mere heads as it contains a materials setting. Together with the given position and place, one could establish a sense of place, which will demonstrates that humans set up a relationship with a place to produce meaning and emotional connection to place. Relating to; Ruben Agnew (1987) place being a meaningful area is established utilizing the three fundamental aspects of location, locale and sense of place. (Cresswell T, 2004) Using David Agnew's technique in creating the knowledge of place around Tareen's image, one could see that it is a position situated within the east cost of South Africa and has the materials setting of concrete piers, beaches, buildings, roads, drinking water, and so on. In establishing a feeling of place around this place, you might look at just how and for what reason it is occupied by individual interaction. For example people might use it like a place to go swimming, relax, trip a bike and so on. Through detailing this captured image of the Durban beach, place has been transformed into a meaningful location. Discussing place in relation to Tareen's photo, consideration to the notion of space must be paid.
